Yale

Yale is a company that specializes in the manufacture of security locks for homes and other establishments. The pin tumbler lock is its most famous product, but shackle padlocks, combination padlocks, digital door viewers and security alarm kits are also available.

History

Yale was founded by two men, Henry R. Towne and Linus Yale, Jr., after whom the company was named in 1868. However, Linus Yale’s inventions and designs began years before the company was founded. From 1843 to 1857, Yale patented several lock designs that would become staples decades later, namely vault locks, safe locks, padlocks and bank locks.

The 20th century saw the company expand operations throughout the world to the point that they now employ more than 12,000 people, one of the largest in the industry. Through a series of acquisitions and ventures, the company was able to expand operations quickly.

Expansion

Yale established its presence in the UK after buying H&T Vaughan, one of the lock pioneers in Wood Street, Willenhall, and it quickly became one of the area’s biggest employers. Due to the efficiency of its products, the name “Yale” has become the generic term used in the US and UK for pin tumbler keys and locks.

In 2003, Yale was purchased by Assa Abloy, and the Yale Security division began to expand its product line and manufacture a wide array of alarm systems, glass break detectors and fire alarm systems.

However, there’s no question that its padlock line is still the best known, and to meet the demand the company continues to produce a wide array of products to satisfy customers. Apart from the popular residential padlocks that everyone is familiar with, Yale also manufactures a wide range of commercial padlocks, outdoor security padlocks and brass padlocks for daily use. The same variety is present in their CCTV and digital door viewer line.
