Indirect Hot Water Cylinders

Indirect hot water cylinders generate heat from an external heat source like a solar panel or boiler. The water contained in the cylinder gets heated up via an internal coil/heat exchanger, and this is what moves the heat generated from the external heat source into the water contained in the cylinder.

While the cylinder gets the heat from an internal heat mechanism, the original heat is externally obtained, and that is the reason why it is indirect. There are many types of indirect hot water cylinders, but all of them can be equipped with immersion heaters that work as supplementary heat providers, but even so they are still considered indirect water cylinders.

There are manufacturers today that provide the immersion heater with the cylinder, but additional ones have to be bought separately. Compared to direct models, the heat up and recovery times are much faster with indirect units.

Unvented Cylinders

Unvented cylinders usually work from the mains pressure water and utilise the water mains system so the water flows in the desired direction. With an unvented cylinder, a header tank is no longer required, and the hot water flow rates are higher. It’s this feature that makes them practical to use for baths, showers and other applications that require a lot of water.

An unvented, indirect cylinder also does not need a feeder tank, allowing you to conserve space. Different types of unvented cylinders are now sold with the best ones made from high quality materials like stainless steel. The quality of the materials used for these cylinders are important as it determines their longevity.
